Practicing Writing

I have one goal in mind for today (well, two if you count ordering some snacks from Costco), beginning to learn how to write good sentences. Better sentences. Not that there's anything wrong with my current writing or writing style, but I want to get better. I want my sentences to be able to flow like the wildest rivers, my words be able to punch with the heavyweight champions, my ideas be able to light up the sky in colors not yet seen. Writing is beautiful, it’s an art form, and I am only just learning how to paint.

Practicing writing requires writing; it’s why I created this website. The other helpful practice tool I’ve read about is, of course, reading. Good authors, bad authors, new authors, old authors, try reading (and re-reading) them all. Copy the styles, mimic the themes, then write, and write some more. Maybe one day, your work will be on display, and you’ll have made them all your own.

I went to get a nice, small collection from the library’s tall and dusty shelves. One about writing, one to re-read, and one that caught my attention. Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling, and Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. Here's to more reading, writing, and getting better at both!

My snacks: 3lbs of chocolate covered almonds, 1.5lbs of shelled and salted pistachios, 35oz of dried mangos, 20 peanut butter protein bars, and 24 mini fruit bars.
